Our History
Founded in 1832, FUMC has a dual role today. We are both the keepers of our rich heritage and the builders of our promise for the future. FUMC has historically been the flagship of Methodism in Grant County and across our Conference. In 1939, the formation of the Methodist Church began at the convening conference that was held in our beautiful sanctuary. The church has flourished and grown and has also weathered difficult times.

FUMC began in a small log cabin on the banks of the Mississinewa River. Martin Boots and his family and friends established the small congregation which became the first Methodist church in Grant County. As the church grew, it occupied two other buildings before moving to the current location on Adams Street.

The current building was completed in 1923. The first service was held on December 21 of that year with a procession from the old building (where the Firestone Store currently sits) to the new location.' '

A few years ago, the church purchased the old NAPA building at 702 South Adams with the goal that it would be used for ministry purposes. Now owned free and clear, it is producing some income for the church. It is our desire to realize our goal and use it for expanded ministry.

FUMC was built on a firm foundation of faith and is blessed with exceptional leadership in its membership. The church is debt free. It has established an endowment fund. It has survived a very painful and difficult split. Today, we see a renewed vigor and spirit that is leading us into our future confident that we are answering God's call for our congregation and our ministry to Marion. God is doing a new thing among us and it is good.
